Genesis 15:6, He believed ADONAI, and he credited it to him as righteousness.
Abraham is known for his faith in God. God promised to give him descendants beyond what could be numbered and he promised to give his descendants the Promised Land and Abraham believed God. When you read about the faith of Abraham or the list in Hebrews 11 and wonder if they were all made out of some sort of special mud, or maybe it was because they lived back then? The scriptures that tell us about the faith of all of the great men and women and even children in the Bible are there to encourage us not make us feel “less than”. God is saying, “It’s possible for you to trust Him and for you to believe just like they did that all that He has promised He will do because He is faithful, just and Holy and He cannot lie.”
If you take a few minutes and read these chapters in Genesis about Abraham, you see also that his faith didn’t come without questions. He asked God how it was going to be possible because he was old and so was Sarah and they didn’t have any children yet. He asked how they would inherit the land. He also had Sarah lie when they went to Egypt out of fear that Pharaoh would kill him to have her because she was so beautiful. And then Sarah laughed when she heard that she was going to have a child, but did that stop God? Absolutely not! They didn’t go to God in anger, they asked because what God was saying seemed impossible humanly speaking and God explained that nothing is impossible for Him! I have to say here too that we need to be careful who and what we listen to on this because this has become a very legalistic topic at times. I have heard speakers make ridiculous comments that can literally make you paranoid about speaking anything out loud. Now, we must be careful because we all know that our words are powerful and God has told us that we will answer for every idle word, but that isn’t what I am talking about here. This has to do with becoming paranoid that you may have said something at some point that was not faith-filled because you were frustrated, or tired, or maybe just all out having a bad day so welp ~ you just lost everything God promised you! Again God says, “Nothing is impossible with Him!” I do believe that we need to examine what comes out of our mouths because it is a true reflection of what is in our hearts. THAT is what we need to concern ourselves with. If there is doubt or frustration then it’s time to spend more time with God, reminding yourself of who He is. Spend time reading, praying, and worshipping Him! I was praying last night about feeling that satan was just beating the fire out of me, not with my confidence in God, but about myself and some things I believe He is asking me to do and the scripture that instantly came to mind was James 4:7, “Therefore submit to God, resist the devil and he will flee from you.” 2 Corinthians 10:5, “… Taking every thought captive.”
God has equipped us to be able to fight off all of the doubts and fears that come our way. He has given us example after example in His Word of His faithfulness. God is more mighty than your doubt. He is the one who has the final say and He knows your heart. Satan wants to take the message of faith and make you believe that your answer is totally dependent on you and that is the opposite of faith. Faith is believing and trusting God and when that gets down in your heart then your words will line up, God knows where you are and He loves you and wants to help you grow to trust Him in every area of your life. God isn’t sitting there waiting for you to speak out loud words that lack faith so He can say, “So much for that plan!” God is working every day to help you grow, He isn’t wanting you to doubt. If God was that eager to just toss the plans He has for you then why would He even bother? He loves you and He wants to guide you to become all He created you to be and He knows you better than you know yourself. Yes, satan likes to use your words against you and you need to be careful for your own sake what you speak because your mind absorbs what you speak out loud too. The answer is found in seeking God and growing in your walk with Him and as you do the rest will follow. Don’t beat yourself up over things you have said in the past over something you believe God has put in your heart. Take it to Him and ask Him to help you when you are lacking faith. Trust Him and His timing! Determine today that the most important life goal you can have is knowing Him more! We don’t usually trust someone we don’t know.
Allow Abraham’s faith to encourage you today! If he could do it along with everyone else mentioned in Hebrews 11 then so can you! You have the benefit of the Holy Spirit living inside you if you have accepted Jesus as your Savior, AND you have your Bible which is full of all you need to grow in your walk with Him so you have a bit of an advantage. Trust God! He is faithful and His love for you is beyond measure!
