Joshua 24:15, “And if it seems evil to you to serve the Lord, choose for yourselves this day whom you will serve, whether the gods which your fathers served that were on the other side of the River, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land you dwell. But as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord.”
Throughout your life, you will be faced with this question over and over. While you made that decision when you accepted Jesus as your Savior, remember that satan hasn’t given up on trying to derail you! Let’s take a look at a few examples:
Temptation: The most obvious moment is when you are tempted to do something you know is wrong. In that moment, ask yourself, “Whom will I serve?”
The Battle Over Your Mind: What about the more subtle battles, like taking those defeating thoughts captive? Will you take those thoughts captive and fill your mind with the truth of God’s Word, or will you allow them to take you captive? When we choose satan’s lies over what God has to say in any situation, we are serving satan’s purpose of defeat, so again you must ask: “Whom will you serve?”
Persevering: How about when you have waited, and waited, and waited, and nothing has changed, or worse yet, the situation appears to be getting worse? “Whom will you serve?” Will you stop, turn on a worship song, and give God glory for His faithfulness, or will you get angry because you can’t see Him fighting for you?
Praise: When you praise God for who He is, not only are you giving Him glory, you are encouraging yourself in Him, and that is where you will find your hope and peace! That is a choice: “Whom will you serve?”
Weariness: When you are worn out and weary, and you feel like just throwing in the towel, remember that satan, the accuser, is waiting for the moment to tell God, “See, I told you he/she couldn’t make it.” Oh yes, you can! You just have to decide is “Whom will you serve?”
Serving God is not always a physical action; it all begins as a heart decision. All of the outward exhibits of “serving” God are just that, outward displays for others to see, but God looks at your heart because that is where service to and for Him is fulfilled. That’s all that matters! Are you serving God or yourself? You can know by asking yourself which is more important to you: What other people think or what God knows? The only thing that will matter for eternity is what we do for Him to bring glory to His name!
All throughout our days, there are choices for our attitudes, reactions, actions, thoughts, and on and on the list goes, but if you determine in your heart to allow God to work in you, He will guide you others will see Him through you.
While the enemy is out to defeat you, God wants to help you overcome whatever comes your way. The best place to start is in His Word, on your knees in prayer, and praising Him for His goodness! One of my constant prayers is, “Create in me a clean heart and renew a right attitude within me!” I don’t want to give satan even a tiny toehold. He is often like an annoying mosquito that starts buzzing the minute you turn the light off. The less time you spend entertaining his whispers, the stronger your faith becomes! So, no matter what comes your way today, choose whom you will serve. Allow God to do a mighty work in you and through you! His best is yet to come!.
