When The “Siege & Famine” Don’t Seem To End…

2 Kings 6:33-7:2, “While he (Elisha) was still speaking, the messenger arrived with this message from the king:  “Here, this evil is from the Lord.  Why should I wait for the Lord any longer?”

Elisha answered, “Listen to the word of the Lord.  Here is what the Lord says: ‘Tomorrow, by this time, six quarts of fine flour will sell for only a shekel, and a half a bushel of barley for a shekel (in the market) at the gate to Samaria.’”  The servant on whose arm the king was leaning answered the man of God:  “Why, this couldn’t happen even if the Lord made windows in heaven!”  Elisha answered, “All right, you yourself will see it with your own eyes; but you won’t eat any of it!”

In this passage, Samaria had been suffering severely through a famine. When the King heard the desperate things people were doing just to survive, he was overwhelmed and angry. He was so full of anger against God because He hadn’t rescued the people from the famine and the King of Syria who had besieged the city, that he was also ready to kill Elisha.

If you feel what you’ve been waiting on has been taking forever, don’t get discouraged. Just like it was for the people of Samaria, your answer could be closer than you think. Think for a moment about the situation Samaria was in: Death seemed inevitable ~ they were going to die from starvation, seriously, they were buying “Dove dung” so they had something to eat, or the army outside the city walls would kill them! Just when it seemed all hope was lost ~ God stepped in!

The enemy loves to throw one trial after another at us, hoping we will finally quit. That is why it’s vital to stay in the Word. Don’t lash out at others or allow bitterness to take root. That is exactly the point satan wants to drive you to. He wants to be able to say to God, “See, I told you they couldn’t take it.” You are a child of the Most-High God and if you have accepted Him as your Savior then His Spirit lives within you and He will get you through to the other side if you rest in Him. Pray and ask God to “Create in you a clean heart and a right attitude”, and ask for strength and wisdom to learn all you can learn through it all.

We all have a choice of how we respond just as the King and his servant who was with him did when Elisha gave them the prophecy of how God’s answer would show up within 24-hours. The King accepted what Elisha said but his servant mocked Elisha. As a result they King experienced the miracle and his servant saw it and died before he could have enjoyed it.

It is heartbreaking to see people going through the motions, saying the right things, but missing out on a close relationship with God. God created us for a relationship with Him. He wants to walk through life with you. Unfortunately, if there’s no relationship, then just like the King’s servant, they may see God at work here and there, but they don’t fully experience the depth of Him. Salvation is more than just a prayer; it is all about growing in your relationship with Him.

There’s comfort in knowing that He is there even when the storms are raging. Money cannot buy that. If you have been feeling as though you may have “missed it” or that God is late, or maybe not showing up at all, remember that He is faithful and His timing is always perfect! Don’t give up! Trust that He is working all of what you are facing for good and His glory! He’s got you!

Verses you can write down ( I use 3×5 cards) to carry with you:

Romans 8:28, “And we know that God causes all things to work together for good to those who love God, to those who are called according to His purpose.”

Psalm 51:10, “Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a right spirit within me.”

James 4:7, “Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.”
