Before You Speak…

Colossians 4:6 Let your conversation be always full of grace, seasoned with salt, so that you may know how to answer everyone.

That is a pretty hefty order these days where you can find someone to push your buttons all day long.  You don’t have to look far, just get on social media or watch the news for a few minutes and you can find something that will irritate you.  In the U.S. we have a very important election coming up and the level of hostility is so far over the top that it is obviously a Spiritual battle beyond what this country has known for an election. We have to be careful to not get caught up in all of the anger and garbage that is out there!  If you want something to be angry about, get angry about the sin that is destroying lives!  We also need to be on our knees in prayer not only for the lost but for Christians who are being swayed by things that anyone walking with God would see as obvious. Arguing with people doesn’t make things better, it just builds anger.

It is easy to react to something someone else says but it takes the grace of God to respond with His grace to others.  Some people are just looking to argue.  Don’t waste your time on foolish arguments, what point will it serve?  When you got saved God gave you His spirit and with that came the fruit of that Spirit: Galatians 5:22, ”But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness gentleness and self-control.  Against such things, there is no law.”  He has already given you the ability, it’s in there but you have to practice allowing Him to guide you.  No, it’s not always easy, but it is a choice, and since we know we will answer to Him one day for every word now would be a good time to turn those words over to Him.  Why would the world want what we have if we don’t behave differently?  I have heard too many Christians say things that sound like they think if they use swear words that is somehow “cool” or “justified”, or makes them look “tough”. Sad to say, I even know several who think it is ok to scream and swear at their spouse because “everyone does”.  My answer to that is “No, everyone doesn’t!”  God’s word says that we will answer for those words so I am not sure why anyone would think it’s ok.  I have to wonder if they would use those same words if they could see Jesus standing there.  Now, if you are the one on the other end of all of those hateful words, you must constantly remind yourself that those words don’t define you and take it all to God so He can build you up!  Do not receive those words in your mind!

God loves you and He loves the people around you too.  He wants His love to ooze out of you and all over them so they will seek Him too.  The world is lost and there’s already a lot of anger and hate out there, let’s not contribute to it, let’s dare to be different.  Abby (18) and I had a conversation one day about this very thing.  I asked her if she ever noticed how it seems that when someone is angry and they start cursing the anger seems to build with every swear word.  At that point clearly, the Holy Spirit has been stuffed in a box for them and they are holding hands with the devil without even realizing it, spewing anger and hate.  The world is desperate for the love of God!  We need to be the difference.  We need to pray for God’s love to fill our hearts and lives so our homes are an example and a refuge.  Ask God to help you today with any area you may be struggling with.  Ask Him to help your words to always be seasoned with His grace, mercy, and love!  Grab hold of His hand and follow Him, knowing His best is yet to come!
