How Many Things Do You Have Vying For Your Attention Today?

Psalm 119:105,  Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.

I don’t know about you but I can always use help with my direction in life!  With all of the chaos and craziness going on we need God’s direction on every level.  There are times when I even need His help to focus on what I need to do because there are so many things screaming for attention that need to be done.  This morning, for example, I was going to heat up a little heat pad I have for my shoulders when they feel tight and instead of putting it in the microwave, I started to put it in the cupboard with the plates instead. 🤔 As I prayed when I sat down at my desk my request began with “Lord, I clearly need help with my focus today because my focus seems to be somewhere out in left field and I don’t even know where the field is!”  The struggle has been real!

There’s always something begging for your attention and if you aren’t careful all of those distractions can draw you away from what God has planned.  It’s a guarantee that if you decide you are going to spend more time reading your Bible and in prayer there will be multiple things that pop up with a sense of urgency to get them done.  They can wait!  I find that the best way to put my mind to rest when that happens is to take a few minutes and write everything down that needs to be done and prioritize, keeping the time reading God’s Word and prayer at the top, and schedule everything out so you can focus on the task at hand.  Distractions come, but more often than not that distraction can wait.  When other people try to push their “emergency” on you because they didn’t plan ahead (children of all ages can be great at that!) Take a moment and evaluate whether or not it is an emergency and you need to help or is it an opportunity for a life lesson?  That is easier said than done, but you can’t be the answer for everyone around you especially if it is taking you away from your time with God.  I love to serve and help but I have a tendency to do it to a fault at times and then I suffer for it.  It’s not worth that!  Set your priorities for what you need to do and then set some boundaries for what can and cannot interrupt that.  There is a balance so if you are finding that it seems every day gets swept away doing everything except what you should be doing then it is time to take your life back.

We are called to be hospitable and to serve others so don’t neglect that time either, but ask God to direct your steps!  Spend time in His Word so it can help light your way!
