If You Want More You Must Use What You Have

Mark 4:21-25. And He said to them, “Is a lamp brought in to be put under a basket, or under a bed, and not on a stand?  For nothing is hidden except to be made manifest; nor is anything secret except to come to light.  If anyone has ears to hear, let him hear.”  And He said to them, “Pay attention to what you hear; with the measure you use it will be measured to you, and still more will be added to you.  For to the one who has, more will be given, and from the one who has not, even what he has will be taken away.”

God’s word is meant to be a light in this dark world, it isn’t meant to be some best-kept secret and yet even here in the United States, we seem to bury it.

Ladies, so often these verses are used in reference to money and being a good steward of our money but even more important to God than how we use our money is how we use His word.  He is talking here about hearing what they were being taught and applying it and using it for His glory and to reach others with what we know.

How often do you sit in church or in a good Bible study and something that you hear pricks your heart and you leave with good intentions but you find down the road that you never really applied it, you got too busy or you were too comfortable with how things are to make the change necessary to apply what you heard?  God doesn’t give us more until we are using what He is giving us today.  Too often when someone is raised in a godly home and in the church they hang their hat on what they already know instead of pursuing studying His word.  We are all called to continuously be learning and growing.  If we aren’t, we are like that stagnant pond and we stink when it comes to the things of God.  There may be head knowledge but it hasn’t sunk into our hearts and made a difference.

The more we study God’s word the more passionate we will become about it.  As Christians we have become too complacent, we get comfortable and we would love to live in our little bubble but it doesn’t work that way.  God doesn’t want us to hide His light, He wants us to shine!  He wants us to get passionate about what He is passionate about but how can you do that if you are never growing in His word.

It works something like this;  we start out reading a few verses and as we grasp what we are reading we find we are reading more and more on a daily basis.  The more we are grasping and allowing the Holy Spirit to use in our lives and grow us the more we seem to understand.  Why would God give us more to apply in our lives if we don’t apply the things He has already given us.  God wants us to grow, but He isn’t just going to dump it all on us at once, He only gives us what He knows we can handle and it is up to us to apply it and seek more.
