Is It A Heart Issue…?

Psalm 19:14 “Let the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be acceptable in your sight, O Lord, my rock and my redeemer.”

Your words are important, we all know that, but we need to look beyond the fact that they are important in your life and the lives of those around you ~ they are very important to God!  Your words say a lot about who you are!  The Bible says in Matthew 15:18-20a, “But the things that come out of a person’s mouth come from the heart, and these defile them.  For out of the heart come evil thoughts ~ murder, adultery, sexual immorality, theft, false testimony, slander.  These are what defile a person;”  It is your heart that matters to God and what comes out of your mouth comes from your heart!

In 1 Samuel 16:7, God is talking to Samuel about who He had chosen out of Jessie’s sons to be king; “But the Lord said to Samuel, ‘Do not consider his appearance or his height, for I have rejected him.  The Lord does not look at the things people look at.  People look at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart.’”  God wants your heart!  He wants you to meditate on Him and things that would be pleasing to Him.  There used to be a popular saying that what you feed your mind is what you will get out of your mind; “garbage in ~ garbage out”!  People don’t seem to worry about that so much anymore, just take a look at most of the stuff on TV.  You need to be very selective about what you watch, listen to, and read because what you fill your mind with is what is going to shine through in your life!  A good verse for this would be Psalm 101:3, “I will set no wicked thing before mine eyes:  I hate the work of them that turn aside; it shall not cleave to me.”

What comes out of your mouth is not a light matter!  It is truly a reflection of who you are inside!  God takes this very seriously!  Ephesians 5: 3-4, “But sexual immorality and all impurity or covetousness must not even be named among you, as is proper among saints.  Let there be no filthiness nor foolish talk, nor crude joking, which are out of place, but instead, let there be thanksgiving.”  Things like, sexual immorality or stealing or other sins don’t just happen, they start in the heart!  It is what you think about that will come to life.  If you allow your mind to dwell on a temptation then that sin will grow in your heart until it becomes a reality if you don’t get ahold of it and it will also start coming out of your mouth in crude jokes and words.  We are called to live godly lives that are pleasing to Him and if we love Him that should be the desire we have!  Everyone wants the blessing of God in their life, but do you want to honor Him in all that you do as desperately as you want His blessing?

Let’s determine today to do some housecleaning in our hearts!  Get rid of anything you are reading, watching, or listening to that is leaving an open door in your home!  Are there TV shows that you watch that God has been convicting you of that you should stop watching?  Do you have books or magazines in your home that need to be thrown out?  Ask yourself if Jesus would read it or watch it or listen to it and if the answer is “NO”, then get rid of it!  Why are you so determined to hang on to it anyhow?  Stop and think if you are struggling to get rid of those books, movies, or TV shows, “why?”  What is so important that you just can’t let it go?  If your true goal in life is to honor God then no book, magazine, TV show, or music should hinder that!  Why even take a chance?   There are a lot of popular books and TV shows out there that I can guarantee Jesus would not waste His time on and neither should you if you want to live for HIM.  Pray about it and allow Him to guide you!
