Nehemiah 4:20-21
Wherever you hear the sound of the trumpet, join us there. Our God will fight for us!” So we continued the work with half the men holding spears, from the first light of dawn till the stars came out.
As the Jews were trying to rebuild the walls of Jerusalem Sanballat and Tobiah fought them from every angle they could think of right down to standing outside the walls yelling insults. The Israelites finally had to resort to building and holding a weapon at the same time. They knew God would do the fighting for them but they were prepared to do their part. How often do we have situations in our lives where we know that God will fight for us but we fail to do our part right down to being prepared when the battle comes?
It is great when we can get to the place in our faith that we know that we are not alone and God is fighting for us but we cannot expect to have to do nothing ourselves. If you are struggling with a particular sin in your life it is true; the victory is already yours but you have to do your part, for example avoiding places or people that might put you in the line of temptation and spending time in your Bible and praying for strength. So often we want God’s help but we don’t spend the time we need to reading and praying we just want Him to somehow wave His hand over the situation and take care of it so we aren’t burdened with doing our part. If it is sin you are struggling with then the best way to fight that is just like Jesus did when He was in the desert, He used scripture.
If you are seeking God’s blessing on your life maybe you need to stop and take a look at your attitude and words about the situation. Your words are powerful and you cannot say one thing and expect something else. When you speak words of defeat over your situation you are fighting against yourself. Pray for God to give you a more positive attitude and for the wisdom to know when the enemy is you.
Prepare yourself today, spend time in your Bible even if it is for just a few minutes or a verse or two ask God to help you with your prayer life – “you have not because you ask not or you ask amiss.” Start memorizing a verse and pray for the wisdom to know what your part is in your battles and in your blessing!
Do your part and God will do His and you will see victory like you have never seen it before.
