Luke 11:42
“But woe to you Pharisees! For you tithe mint and rue and every herb, and neglect justice and the love of God. These you ought to have done, without neglecting the others.”

I have often heard people say that “tithing” is an Old Testament ‘law’. This verse, spoken by Jesus could dispute that. He was getting after the Pharisees by saying that they tithe but they neglected the issues of the heart. They were outwardly offering their tithes, which Jesus said, “ought to have been done” but without “neglecting” the heart issues they had. Not only are we to tithe, but we are to allow God to cleanse us from the inside out, so that even our tithes are coming from a heart to serve Him.

What is the “tithe”? In the Old Testament, it was 10% of all their increase, if you feel your tithe is different, that is between you and God, I am not here to dispute any of that. Since we know that every good and perfect gift is from above then we know that our money is not really just ours to do as we please with, we should be asking God to show us and give us wisdom especially in the area of our money. God is a great god and by requiring us to give a portion back to Him for His service, He is teaching us to serve Him in every area of our lives. I have found in my own life that if my finances are messed up the first thing I have to do is make sure I am tithing! There have been many times when I would think to myself that “I just can’t afford to tithe” and yet I would find that I couldn’t afford to not tithe! I cannot explain it, it is a God thing but we have to trust Him just like it says in Malachi 3: 7b-10:
“Return to me and I will return to you, says the Lord of hosts. But you say, ‘How shall we return?’ Will a man rob God? Yet you are robbing me. But you say, ‘How have we robbed you?’ In your tithes and contributions. You are cursed, with a curse, for you are robbing me, the whole nation of you. Bring the full tithe into the storehouse, that there may be food in my house. And thereby put me to the test, says the Lord of hosts, if I will not open the windows of heaven for you and pour down on you a blessing until there is no more need.”

(I wonder what would happen if every Christian in every city across America decided to tithe. Could it be that just maybe there would be enough surplus to take care of those in need in our communities? Hmmmmmm…….. just a thought.)

Trust Him today with your finances, start by making sure you are giving Him what is His. Pray and ask God for His direction. Obey Him and watch as He provides! The best is yet to come!
