Mark 10:43-45 But it shall not be so among you. But whoever would be great among you must be your servant and whoever would be first among you must be slave of all. For even the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.
Don’t underestimate the importance of even the most “menial of tasks” when it comes to serving God. There really are no “menial” tasks if you are truly doing it with a heart to serve God. Which tasks at church are you more likely to take on with pride; teaching a class or leading worship or would you be willing to clean the church during the week or after a banquet? Both tasks are honorable and it is necessary for each of us to follow God’s leading for our gifts, but we should never look at someone whose gift is to serve by cleaning or cooking or serving at banquets as being less than a teacher or a preacher or worship leader.
We are all called to serve in one way or another and all gifts of service are important. We are the body of Christ and the Bible is clear that one part of the body is no more important than the other we are all called to come together to serve in a way that will bring glory and honor to God. I know personally I have had times when I have thought, “ugh, I don’t want to volunteer to clean the church, I have more important things to do”. Really? What could be more important than taking the time to clean the house of God if I have the time to offer?
Now, here’s the other side of it, don’t feel as though you have to volunteer for every task that comes along, it is important for all of us to be involved and to serve on different levels. Know your gifts, they are the things that come most natural to you and you love to do it. Personally I love to serve, I have always loved to serve other people, Martha in the Bible and I would probably have been great friends and servers together. We tend to have more than one gift so don’t limit yourself. We find our truest satisfaction in life when we use our God given gifts to our fullest ability. If you are not enjoying what you are doing maybe it is because you are missing what it is you are called to do. Stop for a moment and have someone else help you figure out just exactly what it is you are gifted to do, once again they are those things that you do naturally and you love to do them. Don’t miss out on the excitement of serving God in whatever capacity you are called to serve at your church or in your community and don’t feel guilty if for right now you are called to serve in your home because of the needs there. God knows your heart and your individual situations and there are no “menial tasks” when we are doing it for Him!
