Adjusting Your Sails

by | Jul 26, 2018

Proverbs 31: She considers a field and buys it, with the fruit of her hands she plants a vineyard. She dresses herself with strength and makes her arms strong. She perceives that her merchandise is profitable. Her lamp does not go out at night.

There are times in life when God moves in your heart to do something! There are times to be still and just allow Him to work. It is important to walk closely with Him, so you can learn to discern the difference and it is important to be sure that your plans line up with His.

I was doing a little shopping with my sister the other day and I bought a plaque to hang on my office wall that says, “She stood in the storm and when the wind did not blow her way, she adjusted her sails.” (Elizabeth Edwards) There are many ways you could take that saying, but my first thought was she adjusted her sails to be in line with where God was trying to take her. She realized in her storm that something wasn’t right in her own life so she adjusted to allow God to guide her through her storm. When you are in the middle of the storm, there are times the adjustment may be Trust, do you trust God with everything and in everything? Maybe the adjustment is going to church or spending more time reading your Bible or maybe it’s tithing. Whatever it is, I would encourage you to adjust your sails. If things aren’t going your way, then maybe God is trying to show you that your way isn’t in line with His plan for your life.

Notice that in the quote “when the wind did not blow her way” she didn’t try to force things to go her way, she adjusted. God is the wind in our sails, He is the one who gives us strength and direction, so if things don’t seem to be going right ask Him if there are some things that you need to adjust in your own life.

Know this though, there are times when the storm is raging and you just need to tie everything down, pull those sails of yours in and hold on to Him, knowing that He will get you through. There are times when you may not need to adjust, you just need to rest and trust. He’s got you! He is the God who sees, the God who cares and He will get you through to the other side. Ask Him each morning what His plans and dreams are for your life! Pour yourself in to reading His word and hold on to your hope in Him, knowing that His best is yet to come!
