Finding The Favor Of God

1 Samuel 23:7
Now it was told to Saul that David had come to Keilah. And Saul said, “God has given him into my hand for he has shut himself in by entering a town that has gates and bars.

Saul was believing that just because of his position as King that he still had God’s favor. This was right after he had all of the priests and their families killed: 22:17-19 And the king said to the guard who stood about him. “Turn and kill the priests of the Lord, because their hand also is with David, and they knew that he fled and did not disclose it to me.” But the servants of the king would not put out their hand to strike the priests of the Lord. Then the king said to Doeg. “You turn and strike the priests” And Doeg the Edomite turned and struck down the priests, and he killed on that day eighty five persons who wore the linen ephod. And Nob, the city of the priests, he put to the sword: both man and woman, child and infant, ox, donkey and sheep he put to the sword.

He had just killed the priests of the Lord and he still expected God’s favor! Now listen, I am all about praying for God’s favor and blessings on our lives because He tells us to ask, but you cannot live a life riddled with sin and expect His blessing and favor. I believe there are times when maybe a certain sin has been a part of someone’s life for so long they begin to feel as though there is nothing wrong with it. Saul had a history of doing his own thing and then wanting God to lead and bless Him. Sorry, but you are either following God or not! You can’t have it both ways. As it says in Numbers 32:23 “and be sure your sin will find you out.” Just because you have gotten used to your sin doesn’t mean God will.

God wants a life for you that is the best it can be and I mean that in the since that God hates sin because sin will destroy you and those you love. I find myself often praying Psalm 51:10, “Create in me a clean heart, O God; and renew a right spirit within me” I know my thoughts and attitudes don’t always measure up and I need God to constantly cleanse my heart and help me to have His attitudes. Your walk with God is something that requires constant tweeking, we are not perfect. We have choices to make every day that we need to be sure line up with what His word has to say. Hidden sins don’t fit with a lifestyle that is directed by God!

If you truly want the blessing and favor of God on your life, let me encourage you to face the areas in your life that need to be taken care of. Ask God to show you anything that doesn’t measure up with Him and His word. Ask Him to give you a clean heart and a right Spirit and the strength to live a life that is pleasing to Him. God is all about setting you back on the right path. “If what you believe doesn’t affect how you live then it isn’t very important.” (Dick Nogleberg)
