He Will Be Your Refuge till the Storms Pass…

Psalm 57:1, “Be merciful to me, O God, be merciful to me, for in you my soul takes refuge; in the shadow of your wings I will take refuge, till the storms of destruction pass by.”

Do you ever feel that your life is somewhat like a weather report: “Today will be overcast with a 50% chance of rain.”  or, “There’s a storm brewing, and there could be hail, tornadoes, and wind gusts of up to 150 mph!”, better yet, “Today there will be sunshine and 80 degrees!”  And let me ask you this:  why do the worst storms always seem to come after dark? You couldn’t see a tornado if it were across the street at that point!

I love sunny days, who doesn’t, but there is no place on earth that you will find the sun shining every day!  If we never had rain, nothing would grow!  I must say that after having lived in Tennessee for the last 20 years, I could live without tornado warnings!  I grew up in northern Michigan, so the worst storms we ever had were in the winter, although Michigan has had strong storms with tornadoes over the last few years! The weather is unpredictable, and so is life!  If I were to choose, I would take a quiet snowstorm over a tornado or flood any time!

If only we could choose our storms in life, but we can’t!  No matter what kind of storm you are facing, you can know that God sees and He cares. Keep in mind that above all of those clouds, the sun is still shining and it will shine again on you! If you allow God to work in you through your storms, He will guide you and give you peace until it passes. Even if the sun that gives us light doesn’t seem to be shining in your life right now, you can know that the Son has never taken His eyes off you!  There is nothing wrong with asking God to calm the storm and to bring the sunshine back into your life!  In fact, there is nothing wrong with asking Him to divert the storms of life when you see the potential of one coming!  Pray for God to build a wall of protection around you and your family!

Keep in mind that God knows what it takes to bring the best out of us!  If He has allowed a stormy season in your life, seek Him before you start pleading for Him to get you out of it. There’s always something we can learn in any season and that growth is necessary. God has a purpose for your life so trust that if He has allowed it then it has a purpose that as it says in Romans 8:28, He will use it all for good and for His glory. He wants to grow you into all you can be and getting there can often be uncomfortable, but it will be worth it all.

Whatever the season is in your life right now, when you face those cloudy days, I would encourage you to ask God to help you be the sun that shines in someone else’s life.  Allow Him to shine through you in all that you do!  If you learn to trust Him in every season of life, then the storms will be a little easier to handle.  If you are in the middle of a storm right now, cling to Him and allow Him to get you through to the other side! He is trustworthy, and His best is yet to come!
