It’s Time To Commit It To Memory

Psalm 40:8,  “I delight to do Your will, O my God, and Your law is within my heart.”

Don’t ever think that you are too old to be memorizing the Word of God.  I will admit that it is much easier to do when you are a child.  I think it could be because your brain isn’t quite as cluttered with other stuff when you are a child, but whatever the case may be ~ we are not off the hook.  On a side note, this is one reason that it bothers me that it is a rare thing to see churches who do AWANA any more.  We may not have to use that particular program, but every church should be motivated to encourage the people of the church to memorize scripture.  Catch those children while they are little so they will have God’s Word with them.  What Bible verse jumps to mind when you think of a verse that you learned when you were little?  Do your children or grandchildren know that verse?  Do they know the Books of the Bible?  Some days I feel as though I am fortunate if I remember why I walked in the room let alone memorize something, but I am determined even if it takes me longer than I feel it should, to commit one verse at a time to memory to increase that library in my brain, I will do it.

It only stands to reason that the more of His Word we have in our hearts and minds the more desire we will have to follow Him and do His will.  His desires become our desires when we have a close walk with Him.  If you want to know His will for your life then you must get to know Him.  He loves you and His heart’s desire is to guide you into all He created you to be.  He wants to fill you with His love, mercy, grace, and power but you must follow Him.  Walking with God is not a “fake it til you make it” idea.  He wants to be real in your life.  He wants you to be real.  If you want to truly be used by God it takes your allowing Him to come in and clean house.  Ask Him to show you what needs to be added or removed from your life.  What is standing in the way of your focusing on Him?  What is taking up all of your time?  What is messing up the order of your priorities?  What books, tv shows or movies are you clinging to that He has asked you to remove?  What books, tv shows, music, movies, and games are you allowing your children to have that need to go?  Think about what you and your family are filling your mind with and ask yourself if that is pleasing to God and benefiting you and them in your walk with Him. I’m not saying that there aren’t some good things out there, but pay attention to what you are filling your mind with.  It’s not always a popular decision, but what is most important?  It’s like I always tell Abby, “don’t just make good choices, make the best choices, and be selective.”  We all have to do that every day and it’s a challenge.  We all have adjustments to make and if we allow God to, He will help us remove those things that are hindering our walk with Him.

So, I would like to encourage you today to start memorizing the Word of God today.  Take one verse.  Maybe the verse above ~ it’s short and to the point.  Let’s start filling our hearts and minds with His Word and ask Him to help us clean those things out of our lives and families that are not pleasing to Him.  Give it all to Him knowing that truly His best is yet to come.
