Knowing God

John 10:14  “I am the good shepherd.  I know my own and my own know me,”

How well do you know Him?  Are you satisfied with knowing the Bible stories you were taught as a child in church or is knowing Him something you still work at today?

Last night we had a Memorial service for Bill’s brother Don.  Out of all of the funny stories people had to tell about him and the conversations about how much the people of his church loved his voice the thing that stuck out to me the most was that he was known for really searching and wanting to know God more.  His library of books went deep with God.  He studied probably more than most seminary students.  His preacher was even amazed at how deep Don’s knowledge of God, the Bible and church history went. You see, Don was adopted and before he was a part of Bill’s family Don suffered abuse beyond anything you can imagine and somehow that drove Him to learn as much as He could about God.  It was almost beyond his comprehension that God could and would love Him, but he needed to know that all that he believed was real.

What is the biggest thing that would stand out today if you were to pass? Would it be: she found the coolest things on Pinterest, or she was the best shopper, or she was the best cook ever, maybe she always knew what was going on with everyone, or she was a great friend………………. but would anyone know about your relationship with God?

God knows us and cares about every detail of our lives but He wants us to know Him as well!  He wants us to long to know Him better.  His desire is for us to spend time, not because we have to but because there is a hunger to get to know Him more!  The more we know Him the more His love fills our hearts and having victory over those areas of our lives that we struggle with becomes less of a challenge.  I kept thinking last night about the fact that when Don stood before Jesus, Jesus wasn’t a stranger to him, He was an old friend.

I want to know God so well that it is truly the closest relationship I have!  I don’t want to leave Him on the outside looking in at my life, invited in only when I have a problem, I want Him to be an integral part of every area of my life.  I want to know Him so well He rubs off on me.  I want to “look” like Him and the key to “looking” like Him is knowing Him!  Don’s reason for working so hard to get to know God could have been partially because he was looking for security he never felt with people, it was also because he was highly intelligent and would never have settled for a simple knowledge of God.  We all have areas we struggle in and that is one reason God wants us to know Him.  Without studying Don could never have had the relationship with God that he did because he would never have been able to trust Him.  How could your walk with God be better if you knew Him better?  Would you have more faith if you knew Him more?  Could you have victory over the sin you struggle with if you knew Him more?  I will say, there are only positive things that come from knowing God more so what are you waiting for?  Dig in, ask Him today to show you how you can dig deeper and know Him better!

It was a very moving service. Zac wore a pink shirt because he said Uncle Don would have liked that shirt.

One thing I know for sure, I won’t be remembered for my cooking. Just this weekend Zac told me, “No offense Mom, but Momma J is a better cook than you.”

    Thanks Janet….thanks a lot!
