Let’s Get Generous!

Proverbs 14:31. Whoever oppresses a poor man insults his Maker, but he who is generous to the needy honors Him.

What stirs in your heart when you see someone who is less fortunate than you are?  Do the needs of others move you with compassion and a desire to help or do you try to ignore that they exist and move on with your life?

For some reason God seems to have built in me an overwhelming desire to help those in need!  I have always been that way and my children are that way!  There were times when it was rough as a single Mom because of this; I remember Danielle coming home one day and she had given half of all of her school supplies to another girl in her class because other kids were making fun of the girl because she didn’t have any.  I was proud of her for doing it and yet at the same time prayed we would have enough for Danielle!  Honestly, I loved the fact that she reached out in that way!  The Bible is clear that we are to give out of our excess and trust God for tomorrow!

It can be tough having a husband who raises money for organizations like Compassion International because I hear and see the needs of these families and think, “let’s sponsor another child!”  We have 4 children right now that we have sponsored and it is one of the biggest blessings of our lives!  I just love those little kids and knowing that so little money changes their lives and the life of their family, just blessed my heart!  I have gone on Compassion trips and I have seen the poverty and it is overwhelming!  I would have to be a very cold person to not want to help after seeing it!

You don’t have to go to another country to see people in need!  There are homeless shelters that are overflowing with people in need.  Instead of throwing that winter coat out or selling it, why not give it to someone in need?  If you have some spare time, why not volunteer at the shelter?  If you have the desire to help someone in need, the point is that you don’t have to look very far to do it!

Ask God today if there’s something or someone you are overlooking who could use a “hand up”.  Maybe you can open your heart up to a Compassion Child or help the homeless.  Trust me, if you ask God how you can help He will show you!  You will be amazed at the change in perspective you will have in your own life as you reach out to help someone else!  The best is yet to come!
