Let love be genuine. Abhor what is evil; hold fast to what is good. Love one another with brotherly affection. Outdo one another in showing honor.
We are called to be like Jesus and that is exactly the example he gave us. When Paul wrote this, he didn’t seem to merely be making a suggestion to how a Christ follower should behave, it is a command from God! It is time to stop being namby-pamby Christians and take a stand, but keep all of this in mind:
Let your love for others be genuine!
Hate what is evil!
Hold onto all that is good!
Love each other like brothers!
Give more honor to each other than you give yourself! Outdo each other trying!
Now, you can’t just take one of those things and decide, “this part works for me”! You can’t just run around loving everyone and everything, never taking a stand for what is wrong! You are also not called to condemn the sinner, you are called to hate the sin and what it does to lives! Sin is evil because of the lives it destroys, that is Satan’s goal you know. There are times that God may lead you to address something someone is dealing with, but make sure you are God led not doing it out of your own pride.
How are we supposed to handle it when someone we love comes to us and tells us there is something sinful they are struggling with or maybe they have given up the struggle and are now just living there? God help us, we are to hate the sin because of what it is and what it will do in that persons life, but we are to show the love of God to that person and pray diligently for them with our whole heart, mind and soul! What if it were you? Would you be drawn in faster by people who shun you or people who are willing to express their sadness over your struggle, guarantee to pray for you and love you back into the will of God. I am not saying by any means that you act like you are ok with the sin they struggle with, I am saying you are not the judge ~ God is and He will deal with the sin, we are to pray that He draws them back to Him!
We need to keep our eyes so fixed on God that we see sin for what it is and we are so full of Him that His love just oozes out of us. Jesus didn’t tell the woman who was caught in adultery that it was ok to sin, He told her to go and don’t do it again! He prayed for His disciples, that they wouldn’t fall into sinful behaviors, but He still loved Peter when Peter denied Him 3 times! Sin is not a gray area ~ sin is sin! Jesus had to die on the cross for all sin and that makes every bit of it evil, but He overcame sin and death, His victory is our victory and He will give anyone who asks the ability to overcome the sin in their lives. His blood covers all sin and He wants us all to have victory over all that we struggle with! Ask Him today!
