Saturday ~ Story Behind the Song, “Shoulders” by For King & Country
Psalm 121: 1-2, I lift up my eyes to the hills, From where does my help come? My help comes from the Lord, who made heaven and earth.”
One of the things I love most about this song is that it hits so close to home for all of us. Life is unpredictable; none of us can escape those moments where we realize that without God, we simply wouldn’t make it.
We have so many verses to encourage us to lean on Him, here aret a few more for reminders for your heart today:
Matthew 11:28, “Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.”
Psalm 46:10, “Be still, and know that I am God. I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth.”
Isaiah 12:2, “Behold, God is my salvation; I will trust, and will not be afraid; for the Lord God is my strength and my song, and He has become my salvation.”
While we may not always see what God is doing, we can always trust His heart!
The Story behind the Song:
In 2013, while For King & Country was on tour and preparing for the release of their new album Run Wild, Life Free, Love Strong, they felt they needed one more song. That song turned out to be “Shoulders”. It was born out reaw, personal experiences ~ the kind of trials we can all relate to.
Luke had faced a life-threatening flare-up of ulcerative colitis. It was a brutal battle that forced him off the road. This 6’4” very active man dropped to only 125 lbs, as friends and family fought for him in prayer! (This season also inspired the song, “Without You,” a moving duet between Luke and his wife, Courtney, that will definitely bring you to tears.) It is often these desperate times that draw us closer to God and the people we hold dear.
Luke shared the heart behind the lyrics with Songfacts: “The reason why those lyrics mean so much to me is because, after everything I’ve gone through with the battle of my sickness, when you are at your wits end and things aren’t going the way you want them to, you have to ask yourself, ‘Where does my help come from?’”
He further explained to CCM Magazine: “Where does that help come from when our grandfather is dying, or you’re looking at a newborn baby, all of the challenges that lie ahead, or when you’ve been in a car wreck, and you don’t know how you got out.”
If you haven’t heard “this song”Shoulders” yet, let these words sink in:
I look up to the mountains. Does my strength come from the mountains? No, my strength comes from God Who made heaven and earth and the mountains.
When confusion’s my companion. And despair holds me for ransom, I will feel no fear, I know that You are near
When I’m caught deep in the valley With chaos for my company. I’ll find my comfort here ‘Cause I know that You are near
My help comes from You. You’re right here, pulling me through. You carry my weakness, my sickness, my brokenness All on Your shoulders ~ Your shoulders……..

Whatever you are facing today, I encourage you to bring it to God’s throne. Allow Him to help and carry you through! I hope this has encouraged you ~ have a blessed weekend!
