The Truth Matters

Prayer requests will be out later this morning so if you want to add something, email me [email protected], sorry they didn’t go up last night.

2 Samuel 1:16
And David said to him, “Your blood be on your head, for your own mouth has testified against you, saying, ‘I have killed the Lord’s anointed.’”

This story begins at the end of 1 Samuel when the Philistines went to battle against Israel and Saul was wounded and he told his armor bearer to kill him so the Philistines wouldn’t have the opportunity to kill or torture him but his armor bearer wouldn’t so Saul killed himself. This young man that David is talking with in this verse saw all of this happen and knew that Saul’s armor bearer took his own life when he saw that Saul was dead so this young Amalekite decided to “take credit” for Saul’s death somehow thinking that David would be pleased.

Lies bring death, maybe not always quite to this extreme but they bring death to relationships, to trust, to honor. The Bible says in Numbers 32:23b and be sure your sin will find you out. It is important for people around us to know that we speak the truth. Most people who lie a lot don’t realize that they really aren’t good liars and it is obvious when they aren’t telling the truth. I used to tell my children that if I asked them a question more often than not I already knew the answer so they needed to weigh out whether or not it was worth getting in trouble for lying on top of whatever else was going on.

The truth typically does set you free, we are called to be honorable and truthful and if we care about those people closest to us they ought to be the last people on earth we would lie to. If you will lie about little things no one will trust you with bigger things. I have watched as people have lied about something that I couldn’t figure out why on earth they would lie about, something that didn’t matter, but I knew that if it was that much of a habit to lie to me then certainly I couldn’t really trust them with bigger things.  The truth is more likely to set you free if you are the one telling it but if you lie and the truth comes out another way it just may come back to bite you.  Be careful with your words and always strive to be known for being honest!

This young man lied to David thinking it would give him honor and blessing and it brought him death. How honest are you? Let’s all pray today that God will help us to be honest in all that we do to bring Him honor and glory and to enrich our relationships with everyone around us. Let’s strive to be all we can be for Him beginning with honesty and integrity.
