True Freedom in Christ

1 Peter 1:16

Because it is written, “Be ye holy; for I am holy.”

Don’t allow your “freedom in Christ” to take you so far that you forget that you are serving a holy God!  It seems as though God’s grace which is our “freedom in Christ”, (we are free because of what He did for us on the cross) has turned into something totally different to some people.  Freedom in Christ doesn’t give us a license to sin!

Sadly enough I have watched in some circles where it seems to be the “in” thing to use language that would never be considered appropriate in front of a Holy God, but it is used to somehow mistakenly flaunt the “freedom in Christ” idea.  It is a mockery to Jesus and His death on the cross for us to think that in any way shape or form His death allows us to walk, talk, dress or behave in any way we choose.  We are not drawing people who don’t believe to God by using inappropriate language!  What comes out of your mouth is a reflection of what is in your heart!

If you wouldn’t stand in front of Jesus and say or do what you have been doing in your “freedom” then it is wrong!  Sin is sin!  Jesus death didn’t change what sin is, it changed your punishment for it!  In all that we say or do we should honor Him!  He deserves our respect and our words and behaviors should reflect that!  Can you imagine if you risked your life for your children and then they acted like idiots because of it?

We aren’t allowed to be sinful because the world around us is.  We can’t act like everyone else, because we are “free”.  We are to be set apart.  We are to behave like Jesus did, we are to be an example!  We are to stand for what is right and live a life that reflects that!  I remember getting irritated one day because of someone else’s behavior and thinking to myself, “well if they can act that way, I can act this way” and as clear as day God spoke to my heart saying, “No! You will be holy because I am holy!” Woah!  I was immediately convicted that I was thinking it was ok to behave poorly because someone else was!

When you choose your words today, ask God to take charge if this is an area you struggle in.  Ask Him to help you live a life that reflects His holiness!  We all have room to grow in this area and it needs to be a continual process!  Now, you also want to be careful that you do not become legalistic like the Pharisees, Jesus despised their behavior!  They were more concerned about what could be seen than what was in their heart!  Pray and ask God for the convictions you need to have and follow Him with your whole heart.
