Why Would God Tell You to Do Something That Won’t Work?

Exodus 10:1-2, Then the Lord said to Moses, “Go to Pharaoh, for I have hardened his heart and the hearts of his officials so that I may perform these signs of mine among them, that you may tell your children and grandchildren how I dealt harshly with the Egyptians and how I performed my signs among them, and that you may know that I am the Lord.”

The Lord was about to bring the eighth plague on Egypt, the plague of Locusts so he was sending Moses and Aaron to speak to Pharaoh again, and He was letting them know before they headed to the palace that Pharaoh’s heart would be hard and he would refuse to listen. Have you been waiting for God to vindicate you or somehow step in, and nothing appears to be happening? When we, just like the Israelites here, are in uncomfortable or downright awful situations, it would not be our natural tendency to say, “Take your time, Lord, I don’t mind waiting…” No! We want that answer, that vindication, that miracle… whatever it may be, and we want it right now. That’s ok and very normal, humanly speaking, but God doesn’t think the way we do, and He sees the whole picture, so that is rarely HIs plan. While we are after that quick fix, our thinking is minute when compared to the plan and results God is after!

I am sure the Israelites would have loved for Moses to show up and for Pharaoh to be agreeable and just let them go, but God was after something much bigger. God was about to destroy the enemy of Israel, who had treated them so terribly, and Israel was going to plunder them before they went. As it says in Isaiah 55:8, “For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways,” declares the Lord. Don’t wait to understand God’s plan to surrender to it. Understanding usually doesn’t come until later.

God is asking us to trust Him and for full surrender to His plan. When you can’t see or understand why nothing seems to change other than maybe for the worse, just know that what He is working on and about to do will be big enough for everyone to know that it is God. So, don’t give up, hold onto His promises and keep doing whatever it is He puts in front of you to do day by day, knowing that His best is yet to come!
