Your Words Matter

Psalm 55:21. His speech was smooth as butter, yet war was in his heart; his words were softer than oil, yet they were drawn swords.

How we speak often defines us.  In James 5:12 it says, “But above all, my brothers, do not swear, either by heaven or by earth or by any other oath, but let your ’yes’ be yes and your ‘no’ be no, so that you may not fall under condemnation.

So, ladies, when your friends see you coming do they dread what may come out of your mouth or are they excited to be around you because you have uplifting and encouraging words that truly come from your heart?  Now then, what about your family?  It is difficult when you have a friend and you are never quite sure what they really mean or what they may be thinking as they “bless” you.  Hawk Nelson has a great song titled, “Words” and it talks about being careful because our words can build up or they can tear down, words can heal a relationship or words can tear a relationship apart.

In Mark 15:18 we read, “But what comes out of the mouth proceeds from the heart, and this defiles a person.”  If you have a problem with your words it is a heart condition, not a head condition.  You can try to determine all you want to change your words but what you really need to focus on is allowing God to change your heart and your words will follow.

The best measure for where we are with our “heart condition” is usually how we behave and speak at home.  We need to determine to set a godly example for our children, we don’t want them to grow up learning to be grumblers and complainers always displeased with everything and everyone around them.  Our goal for our family should be for their words and attitudes to glorify God at all times and the only way for children to learn that is through the example of their parents.

Ask God today to work in your heart and for His thoughts and attitudes to become yours.  If this is an area you struggle in you will be amazed at the peace that will fill your home as you allow God’s peace to fill your heart.
