Yup! That’s My Dad All Right!

Joshua 15: 18-19
When she came to him, she urged him to ask her father for a field. And she got off her donkey, and Caleb said to her, “What do you want?” She said to him, “Give me a blessing. Since you have given me the land of the Negeb, give me also springs of water.” And he gave her the upper springs and the lower springs.”  That’s my Dad all right!

Caleb had just given his daughter Achsah to Othniel because he had captured Kiriath-Sepher as Caleb had asked. Caleb was a mighty warrior and I am sure Othniel didn’t take that fact for granted. His father-in-law was a mighty man in Israel so who knows what he thought when Achsah told him to ask for a field. I know when I was a teenager guys were terrified of my Dad! He could be a bit intimidating, but to me, he was my Dad who loved me and he was my protector and he loved to bless me! I remember one time a friend of mine who lived on our “country block” called me and asked if he could get a ride to the basketball game (we were in Junior High, so we couldn’t drive) and my Dad when he realized who was calling asked me for the phone. I gave him the phone and he said, “What are you doing calling my daughter?!”, in a gruff voice and then handed me back the phone while he cracked up laughing. The poor guy on the other end was a wreck and I just laughed and told him, he was just kidding. In light of my relationship with my Dad, I sort of had this feeling that maybe Othniel had the same issue with Caleb that Walter had with my Dad. He was thinking, “yeah right, like I am going to ask your Dad to give us springs of water after he just gave you to me in marriage….. uhm no! You ask him if you want the springs!”

Achsah, obviously knew her Daddy loved her dearly so she didn’t have a problem jumping off her donkey and asking! She knew that she could ask in confidence, not even because she needed it, he had already given her Negeb, she just wanted it!

How was or is your relationship with your Dad? Whether you are a man or a woman, know this: “if your Dad isn’t being a Dad, he may be your father, but not a real Dad ~ God has promised to fill that role in your life!” Just because your Father may not be dead, it doesn’t mean you aren’t “father-less” and God has promised to be a “Father (DADDY) to the father-less”! Ask Him for it, hold Him to that promise and believe for that relationship, ask Him to show you what that looks like! That need for a Daddy in your life is a huge need and one He is willing to fill in your life if you will just let Him in! He loves you! He wants you to be able to run to him like Achsah did with confidence and that lighthearted air that “my Dad loves me and if it is right for me, He will bless me with what I am asking for!” He wants that closeness in your walk with Him! Don’t hold Him at arm’s length! Be that ‘Daddy’s Girl’ or if you are a man, know that He is looking down saying, “That’s My Boy!” He loves you more than is humanly possible to love! You mean the world to Him! Don’t miss out because of the walls you have built from the hurt in your past! Open up and let Him in! Don’t buy Satan’s lies that will keep you apart, don’t let Satan hurt you that way! Allow God to heal your wounded heart today! The best is yet to come!

    Dear Janet,
Thank you for the awesome scripture and message! I believe we all need that reminder of who our Dad is and that we can truly ask for what we need and for what we want! (I know I needed to be reminded today 🙂
    Many blessings <3

Me too Dana! I need to be reminded often even though I had such a great relationship with my earthly Dad!
